Dinner Questions Kids Love
Authentic connection is the most important ingredient for happy, healthy families. This happens through play! But busy modern life wears away the time and energy it takes to connect.
Dinner time is one of the most impactful places of family connection. Optimizing your screen-free dinner, means strengthening your relationships and supporting your children’s development.
Many family engagement products are designed with adult goals in mind. They want to teach lessons and develop competencies. Without realizing it, when we ask kids to converse like adults, we lose out on the power of play and imagination!
Heart House Dinner Questions are designed to draw adults into the brilliant worlds of children because once you’re all talking and having fun, great things will naturally follow.
How It Works
- Find an empty, clean glass jar.
- Place the Heart House sticker on it and decorate as you please.
- Blank cards are for family-specific questions. Use sharpie or pencil.
- Place the questions in the jar and serve with dinner!
- Everyone gets to answer before another question is drawn.
Our Recommendations
- These questions are best suited to school-aged children.
- Questions should not be mandatory. Family members can choose to “pass.”
- Decide how many questions to pick at each dinner. Less questions make for longer discussions so use follow-up questions and don’t rush!
- Consider recording answers in a journal or on the back of the question paper so you can reuse them and compare your answers over time. Do you remember what you said? Did you say the same thing this time?
How It Started
At dinner time with my partner and his two kids, there used to be lots to distract us. Something was missing… So, I emptied and cleaned a glass jar, cut-up some construction paper, wrote down as many random questions as I could think of, tossed them in and served them with
dinner.
We noticed right away our dinners became a lot more fun! We talked. We laughed. We forgot about stressors of the day, and we got to know each other better.
Eventually, I found similar products online. I tossed an “expert-endorsed” question pack in my cart and moved on. But, we only ever picked from those questions a few times. Then one day, the oldest explained, “Your questions were better. I want to talk about superheroes!” With that, I got back to business!
